Landing at Washington DC’s Reagan National Airport

Last month we had the privilage to fly a patient and their family from Washington DC to a facility that was closer to home.  This required an air ambulance company who could secure the special permissions needed to fly into Washington’s Regan National Airport.  On the flight to the airport one of the crew members filmed the approach and landing at Washington DC on the famous River Visual 19 approach.

This is one of the hardest approaches in North America.  The pilots had to recieved special training to comply with the requirements set forth by the government before they could even ask for permission to try the approach.

The approach starts 10 miles to the Northwest of the airport and requires the pilots to decend to the airport while staying over the river.  On the left bank of the river you pass some of Washington’s biggest monenment including the Lincoln Memorial, Reflecting Pool, Washington Monument and the White house.  The East bank has you fly by CIA headquarters and the Pentegon.  For anyone who has had the chance to land at Regan National you know just how close some of these landmarks are.

The river itself is only 200′ across at the beginning and widens to just about 400′ at the airport.  Enjoy the video!

Waiting in Vain? What Happens When Your Medical Flight is Delayed

LearJet Engine Repair

What will you do if you have to wait to have your aircraft repair?

We regularly get the call for help from patients families, but it’s not the call you would think.

“Help! My mom is supposed to be flown today and the air ambulance company just told me that the aircraft is broken and won’t be available for 36 hours.”

What Happens Now?

Since many transports are time critical waiting for parts to arrive and then the aircraft mechanic(s) to install them really isn’t an option.  The next step for the patient is to start calling other providers to hopefully find someone who not only has an aircraft that is available, but also one that is close enough to still be affordable.

When researching providers make sure that you choose one who has the resources to ensure your flight happens as smoothly as possible.  Ask your provider:

  • How do you ensure the aircraft will be ready for my trip?
  • If the aircraft is unable to fly the mission is there a backup?
  • How long will it take to get the backup aircraft deployed?

When is an Aircraft most likely to be Delayed for Maintenance?

Thankfully, planes seldom develop issues that require a diversion while in the air.  Most problems will appear between the time the flight crew preflights the plane and the taxing to the runway.  This is why at Mercy Jets, we recommend using the proper aircraft for the mission.  On our international and transcontinental transfers we prefer to use Gulfstream or Challenger aircraft since they can safely cross the ocean without stopping.  Comparatively, a LearJet will normally require at least 1 stop when crossing the country and 4 – 5 stops when coming back from Europe.  Imagine stopping for fuel in Iceland and then the aircraft develops a problem.  Now you are waiting 24 hours or more for a part to be shipped in and replaced.  Now imagine that it’s your loved one is the patient in that airplane waiting for the part.

Mercy Jets works to ensure that the right aircraft is paired with the patient for both their medical needs and the requirements for the route of flight.  The less number of stops made the better.

Do You Really Want to be left waiting?

Mercy Jets Medical Director Trains Military Doctors

Dr. Patel is training US Military Doctors, ensuring they can give the best medical care to their patients

US Air Force C17 converted for use as an air ambulance

With over 134 casualties in the Afghanistan conflict this year already, the military continues to use its reserve forces.  Report indices show over 3000 casualties for personnel deployed into Afghanistan in the past decade with over half being United States Citizens and the yearly average (previous three years) of 600 deaths.  The estimate of wounded soldiers is nearly triple the amount of casualties.  “The military joint forces air-evacuation program is saturated”, stated U.S. Army Captain (name undisclosed).   His request to us rendered the answers needed.

“Can you get into Basara”? was the first question asked of one of our medical flight coordinator. Our respond, “Yes” and we promptly set to work on arranging the air evacuation of personnel.  “We pride ourselves on helping all in need, regardless of what Country, ethnicity, race, or gender… our only goal is simple. Provide Complete Continuity of Care for all patients to receive the medical services needed to sustain life or prevent further injury.”

Dr. Patel is training US Military Doctors, ensuring they can give the best medical care to their patients

We not only support medical evacuation efforts worldwide but are also involved in training medical personnel for the military.  Currently our Medical Director, Dr. Kumash Patel, has been training a military reserve doctor to insert chest tubes and other emergent trauma surgery procedures for the an upcoming activation and deployment near the Middle East.

Even with the drawdown of U.S. troops in the Middle East, local government officials and personnel have a dire need for quick access to medical care in those areas. We do not take a political positions, but thrive on servicing the specific medical needs of patients, by working with governments, family, and other medical personnel to transport the patient to proper medical facilities.

Happy Presidents Day

American Flag

Today is President’s Day! A federal holiday that is a celebration of two of our greatest presidents, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.  Here at Mercy Jets we just want to take a moment to acknowledge this day and the accomplishments of these two men.

As a worldwide provider of air ambulances, we have the privilege of traveling to different regions of the world and the contrast between different countries politics, policies, and processes is quite evident to us.  And while nothings perfect, we do quite well in comparison to other countries.

And for those of you that have the day off, we’re jealous.

Happy Presidents Day!

Valentines Day and Heart Health

Positive Effects Valentines Day Can Have On Your Health

Finger Painting with Candy

Happy Valentines Day!

Valentines Day leads us to romantic images of holding hands, walks through the park, kissing, candy, and romance.  But, did you know that these things are just as beneficial to the heart as they are to the soul?  Read on to find out just how good Valentines Day is for you health.

Social Interaction

Recent studies have shown that reductions in stress and anger have a huge effect on heart health.  Cardiologists believe that the excessive amount of hormones adrenaline and cortisol, which release during these periods of high stress may even be causes of strokes and heart attacks.  Something as simple as a hug or talking with a friend can have huge beneficial effect and help shield one from some stress.

If you find yourself feeling lonely today make a concerted effort to get out and socialize.  Even if you feel uncomfortable or awkward make an effort today to get out and talk, even with strangers.  Any human interaction is can make you feel better.  There are even anti-valentine day parties around the nation today.

Getting out for a Walk

Even a Short Walk can have lasting effects on the Heart, Mind, and Body

You’ve heard it, time and time again, that any sort of exercise is positive for your health.  But the image that most of us have of excercise is going to the gym and working out or running till ones legs can move anymore.  But we suggest taking a walk (even better if you can make it a brisk one) to that movie tonight or even just around the block.  The time spent focusing on the present moment and the connections that you can build and reinforce will do wonders for you.  Lowering your stress levels by not only the “excercise,” but also with the release of endorphins (those feel good chemicals in the brain).

Chocolate

Recent studies have found that the chemicals in chocolate have been found to have favorable health effects on the human body.  There is even some evidence that it might be able to cut the risks of developing heart disease by as much as a third.

The cocoa bean is full of flavonoids which can act as an anti-oxidant inside the body.  And while it has been shown that flavonoids help the body eliminate substances which cause diseases, their main advantage is in controlling of cholesterol levels by decreasing LDL, while raising HDL.

Now before you run off to the store to buy that box of chocolates, full of caramel, creams, liquors, etc.  the word to remember is “DARK.”  Milk and White chocolates do not contain these chemicals.  In order to reap any health benefits from chocolate at all it needs to be at least 75% cocoa.  While most of us are use to very sweet milk chocolates, the rule of thumb is the more bitter the chocolate, the more flavonols it contains.

A Glass of Wine

Red wine is thought to have some of the same health benefits that Dark Chocolate does.  This comes from the finding of flavonoids within the skin of the grape used to make red wines.  It also contains Quercetin, an anti-oxidant that is an antihistamine and immune system booster.  There is even some evidence that Quercetin might also help reduce plaque formation in the arteries of the circulatory system.

But just like chocolates, you have to select your wines carefully as some are better then others.  Cabernet Sauvignon has the highest levels of these chemicals followed by Syrah and Pinot Noir.

But be careful with wine.  Excessive amounts of alcohol can lead to negative effects on the human body, quickly negating the positive effects of the red wine.  A good rule of thumb would be one 4 ounce glass of red wine a day.

Understanding Your Blood Pressure Numbers

Blood Pressure is the measurement of force applied to the blood vessels in the body

Read as 120 over 80 millimeters of mercury

Your blood pressure is so important that during an air ambulance mission, we at Mercy Jets, continually monitor it status.  It is considered one of the principle vital signs.  But what is blood pressure and what do those numbers really mean?

What is Blood Pressure?

Blood Pressure is a measurement of the force applied to the blood vessels in the body

Blood Pressure, is a measure of force against the walls of your arteries and veins.  It rises to a high (systolic) during the heart contractions and then falls to a low (diastolic) during the relaxation of the heart.  And while your blood pressure will vary depending upon your current activity (i.e. sitting, walking, sleeping, exercising), it should normally be less than 120 systolic and 80 diastolic for an adult 20 years or older.

The danger lays in the fact that you may go years with high blood pressure (hypertension) without any symptoms and having uncontrolled high blood pressure can put you at risk for serious health problems including heart attack and stroke.  According to the American Heart Association, 1 in 3 adults have high blood pressure.

Blood Pressure Chart

Have unusually low blood pressure readings evaluated by your physician.

A diagnosis of high B.P. cannot be determined by a single reading however.  If you or your physician are concerned about your B.P. then a monitoring program should begin to keep track of these reading over time, this may even include monitoring  your blood pressure at home.

Remember!  Home monitoring is not a substitute for visits to your doctor!

Is Systolic or Diastolic more important?

In the past, more emphasis was placed upon diastolic pressure.  However the latest research indicates that high Systolic and high Pulse Pressure (the difference between the Systolic and Diastolic pressures) are also risk factors.  For people over the age of 50 the Systolic pressure is used as a major risk factor in the diagnosing of hypertension, due to the hardening of arteries and build up of plaque within the blood vessels.

Easy Steps

What are some easy steps you can take to help lower your blood pressure:

  • Be physically active for 30 minutes a day (a walk around the block does count)
  • Reduce your salt intake
  • Limit the amount of  alcohol you drink
  • Reduce your stress

Warning!

If while monitoring your blood pressure you encounter a reading greater than 180 over 110, wait a couple of minutes and then take it again.  If the second reading is still 180/110 or above you may be having a Hypertensive Crisis.  It is imperative that you seek medical help immediately.

3 Easy Tips towards a Healthy Heart

Heart in Apple held by child

Healthy Heart TipsFebruary is the month dedicated to your heart health as it is also the month that temptations of chocolates and other sweets may be most prevalent. You can still enjoy these foods in moderation and calm that sweet tooth while decreasing the amount of unhealthy fats that are detrimental to a healthy heart. You most likely know that eating healthy can decrease your heart disease risk, but changing your habits is difficult. A recent article published by the Mayo clinic suggests following some simple steps to a healthier happier heart.

1. Limit Unhealthy Fats and Cholesterol

You’ve heard time and time again that fat is bad and eating fats means more fat around those hips and thighs. So how do you reduce that unwanted blood cholesterol that increases the plaque buildup within your vascular system, clogging arteries, which can lead to a blockage of oxygenated blood flow to your heart. The American Heart Association states that the best way to cut the bad fats (saturated and trans fats) is to limit the amount of solid fats that you consume, such as butter, margarine and shortening. One simple substitution is to use olive oil to grease your pans when cooking versus solid butter. The AHA suggests looking at the labels of food products you consume and take notice to the term “partially hydrogenated”, especially as the first ingredient listed. This is a good indicator that the product has trans fats and oils that are harmful to your heart’s health. Try using mono-saturated fats and poly unsaturated fats found in nuts and seeds. Smart choices such as these may help lower your total blood cholesterol.

FATS TO CHOOSE

  • Olive oil
  • Canola oil
  • Margarine that’s free of trans fats
  • Cholesterol-lowering margarine, such as Benecol, Promise activ or Smart Balance Butter

FATS TO LIMIT

  • Lard
  • Bacon fat
  • Gravy
  • Cream sauce
  • Non-Dairy creamers
  • Hydrogenated margarine and shortening
  • Cocoa butter, found in chocolate
  • Coconut, palm, cottonseed and palm-kernel oils

2. Select Whole Grains

Fiber and whole grains are good for your digestive tract but also help regulate blood pressure and decrease the amount of work your heart has to conduct. Avoid foods with “bleached” in the ingredient label and try to buy whole-wheat flour or 100% whole-wheat products.

Grain products to choose

  • Whole-wheat flour
  • Whole-grain breads
  • High-fiber cereal with 5 or more grams of fiber a serving
  • Brown rice, barley and buckwheat (kasha)
  • Whole-grain pasta
  • Oatmeal (steel-cut or regular)

Grains to Avoid

  • Ground flaxseed White, refined flour
  • White bread
  • Muffins
  • Frozen waffles
  • Corn bread
  • Granola bars
  • Egg noodles
  • Buttered popcorn
  • High-fat snack crackers

3. Reduce Your Salt Intake

Sodium or table salt is nearly in everything we eat. However a healthy adult should have no more than 2,300 milligrams of sodium a day and those 51 or older, African-American, and people with high blood pressure, diabetes or chronic kidney disease should have no more than 1,500 milligrams of sodium a day. Eating fresh foods and looking for foods that state “reduced sodium” is a start. Try counting how much sodium intake you have ingested in your normal diet over the period of one day. This is a good indicator and will help you become more conscious of your food choices.
