Relay for Life 2013: American Cancer Society Raises Money and Awareness with annual fundraising events

Relay For Life 2013

What is purple, goes all night and involves over 4 million people across 20 countries? Relay For Life!

Every year, in celebration of another 365 days of life and another birthday, the American Cancer Society puts on an all-night walk to raise awareness and funds for cancer research.

Leading up to the event, friends, families and community members get together to form teams, often including unique names and fun, themed dress. Teams will then organize fundraisers that may include anything from personal donations to car washes to bake sales.

The Main Event

In August, one of the biggest Relay for Life events will take place on Saturday, Aug. 17 in downtown San Diego to celebrate the lives of cancer survivors and lost loved ones.

The first lap of the evening will be dedicated to all cancer survivors and as they walk around the track while friends, loved ones, supporters and caregivers cheer from the sidelines.

Once the sun has gone down the Luminaria Ceremony will begin with candles lit in honor of those who were lost to cancer.

Food, board games, music, dancing and sporting activities will carry on into the night as members of each team rotate walking around the track.

Where Do Donations Go?

Every year Relay For Life raises more than $400 million in fundraising and donations. The American Cancer Society supports the following programs with the funds raised from donations:

  • Research on finding a cure
  • Hope Lodge, a free place to stay for those that find their most effective treatment is in another city or state. There are 31 Hope Lodges around the nation.
  • Road to Recovery, a program that provides transportation to those unable to drive themselves or who need a ride to treatment.
  • Look Good…Feel Better, providing women cancer patients with a free service that teaches them beauty techniques that help manage the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatments.
  • Reach To Recovery, a support system that helps those diagnosed with breast cancer cope with the experience. Volunteers give support over the phone and through face-to-face visits.
